Your information is too vague. What kind of builds are you using? Are you grouping with other random people in PUGs? Are you using henchmen? How far along is your character (since you say you are trying to reach S.Shiverpeaks? Are you ascended? Etc...

I you need help with being a ranger in general, you should post in the ranger forum, there's a lot of experienced ranger players on here willing to lend a hand. But from what you've posted here, not much help can be garnered.

I agree with the prior poster that you need to be specific with which mission or area you are having trouble with and the nature of the parties you are using.

My bet is you are having one of two problems:

My first guess is are you running into groups of Mursaat or Jade? You should not be fighting them until you are half way done with the Iron Mines mission and get your armor infused. Until you have infused armor, they have a skill that will kill you in about 5 seconds. This is particulary important in the Ice Caves mission where you shuold not attempt the bonus and should completely avoid groups of Mursaat or Jade and come back after Iron Mines for bonus. If it is Ice Caves you are having trouble with, I suggest you search this site for mission walk throughs as it is fairly easy if you know how to avoid the Mursaat groups.

My second guess would be over-aggroing. The southern shiverpeaks has most monsters and mobs all over level 20. You can not just charge in and overwhelm them with brute force. You have to be careful to only fight one mob at a time and kill the dangerous individuals (like monks, mesmers and eles) first.

Hope that helps...

[I am adding on since your post went in before I saw it].
You did not ascend, are you in Northern, or Southern Shiverpeaks? Did you get run from beacons?
If that is the case I recommend you go back to Kryta and go thru the jungle and desert and ascend, then try southern shiverpeaks again. Also make sure you have max armor from Droknars Forge or you will die really fast.

Did you buy max armor at Droknar's Forge?

Are you using max weapons?

Have you capped any useful elites?

You may want to return to where ever you left off in the story to gain some more skills and experience as you work your way thru the story.

Did you get a run from Beacon's Perch to Drok's and now trying to fight down there at lvl 12?

You're not giving anyone enough information on where exactly you're at. The Shiverpeaks is a pretty large area (including Northern and Southern).

Whew! I guess I'm really behind! No I havn't ascended(don't even know where or how)Havn't been to Droks yet,and I don't have a clue about max armor or weapons. And no idea about elite caps.Sorry if my memory goes blank after I leave the game and get here, just getting old I guess, this game is much more in depth than any thing I've ever played before!I started with the old Bards Tale and Sierra games many yrs ago.BIG difference. Thanks for all the help ,maybe I'd better back track a bit.

Well I know I've done Divinity Coast Mission and been through the jungle but don't think I've finished the wilds so here I go back to do that.It seems that even if you've done a mission you can go back and redo it but theres no points ,so its hard to tell if you've finished it all.Except maybe for the sword through the symbol(?) on the map. Thanks again for the quick replys now back to the game.

The way you tell IS the sword symbols on the map. One sword means you've only completed the mission. Two swords means you have done mission and bonus.

Big point: have you upgraded your armour? One of my guildies when he first started ragequit on us in the desert because the sand giants were taking him down in 2 hits - turned out he was still using Ascalon armour... :S

Another good point is if you're getting a bit stumped, wiki usually offers pretty comprehensive walkthroughs of all missions. After you've done them with a couple of chars, you get to know what to expect and get better at it

I was in limbo for a while with my Prophecies Ranger. I finally got my finger out a month or 2 ago and finished the game. Get to Sanctum Cay and do it's mission - that takes you to the Desert. From there you can do the Ascension missions, get your remaining attributes (there are quests to get an extra 2 lots of 15 attributes points) and begin capping Elite skills.

Cap "Barrage" and "Poison Arrow" as soon as you can. They are the best, IMO.

http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page is your friend, you can look up mission guides (which often mention which henchies work the best), skills, builds, armour locations, everything.

Oh, and I started with Bard's Tale too, on an Amstrad CPC!

Sound like he was trying to get to drok from beacon, by fighting with the henches.

I started playing Guild Wars when Factions came out. Prophecies I bought later and I sympathise with the OP...Tyria, when I first started playing, it was cryptic as hell...I'd find myself playing with more experiences players and not understanding how they just knew where the bonuses were...or even just where to go...it was like one big maze.

My best pieces of advice I can offer are:
1. If you end up in another outpost that isn't a mission town after you complete a mission look around for someone with a primary quest for you.
2. If you're going to meet someone who isn't Mhenlo (this happens more in Elona than anywhere) always assume they're going to turn bad and you have to kill them. I'm currently trying to get Legendary Survivor on my Ranger and before I talked to anyone I would put a trap underneath them...just in case
3. Definitely worth reading up on Guildwiki about all the missions before you do them...that way you'll have at least some idea on where you're supposed to be going. This is particularly useful in the Desert where you have to make your own way to the three desert mission towns with no guidance, no pointer, no idea where to go...Guildwiki has plenty of maps showing where these places are.
4. Research where you can find Elite Skills (in Tyria, it's from the Desert onwards) so you know when to take a signet of capture with you.
5. Upgrade your armor as efficiently as possibly. You don't need to do it at every armor crafter...but when you get to Droknar's Forge that is the highest level armor you can get...so you should get the armor there. (Armor Level 70 is max for Rangers)

One thing to remember above all other...NOTHING in Tyria is obvious!

If the town you're in looks like a shield on the map, it's a mission town, do the mission and it'll take you to the next town. If that town is a mission town, do that mission or look for someone who wants to talk to you and give you a "primary" quest. Follow any primary quests you have, they will move you on in the storyline to the next place, etc.... Your goal in the Desert after Sanctum Cay is to get to the 3 mission towns, Dunes, Elona's Reach and Thirsty River. Beat those missions and you can go to Augury Rock and "Ascend". There is more after that...

Insignias are only for armour bought in Nightfall (it's confusing because all rune traders sell them, but you can't use them with armour in Prophecies or Factions). You don't need them anyway, they just replaced the inherent bonuses that Prophecies armour already has.

Capping involves using a "Signet of Capture" after a boss has died, to capture its elite skill for your own use. This isn't important in low level areas, because there aren't any elite skills to cap, but in "Southern Shiverpeaks" and the "Ring of Fire" Islands, it becomes much more important.

"The Wilds" is a Maguuma jungle mission. You can actually skip all this part if you want, because the next really important mission is in south west Kryta (Sanctum Cay). It depends on whether you want to experience the whole story, or rush through to the higher level areas. Look at the maps, on this site, to get a better idea of where everything is.

Please, no more encouraging people to rush through the first time!

The OP seems impatient a little bit, but all through the jungle, there are tons of quests which give him more experience (I'm talking play-experience, not just leveling experience), and lots of useful skills he'll need.

Johnn, if you are lacking in funds to purchase better armor, remember to talk to collectors around the jungle. Although the armor has no inherent bonuses, it will be BETTER AL than any you can craft in the area. Also, collectors in the desert (when you do get there) give you as high AL as that you can craft in Droknar's Forge (ie max).

If you go back to Lion's Arch, you can get a quest that will give you a capture signet. The NPC is Magi Maliquire (sp?) and he explains how to use it, and gives you one as a reward too. Basically, after you kill a boss, you can use the signet to "capture" his elite skill. It's the only way to get the elites.

Just to tie together this post and Jongo's, while there are bosses before you get to the desert, there are no bosses with "elite" skills.

Elite skills differ from regular skills in that they are supposed to be more powerful, and you can only equip one on your skill bar at a time. People frequently build their skill bar around their elite skill, or use it for specific problems in the area or mission they are doing.

You can use a signet of capture to capture regular skills too, but generally they are only used to cap Elite skills (icon will have a goldish outline to differentiate it).

Have fun.
